Way back in my sordid youth, I had a regular radio show on KGLT-FM, Bozeman MT. At the time KGLT had the largest market share of any independent station in the entire northwestern U.S. In my guise as "The Starpilot" (KGLT's only DJ to both have a fan club, and get hate mail) I nominally played "New Wave" but I never specified New Wave what -- after all, Jazz could be regarded as "new wave Classical", German Progressive rock as "new wave Jazz", Country as "new wave Blues", etc... Besides, back in that era, Punk and New Wave were relatively new and the selections available were still somewhat limited. And as I'll tell anyone I can corner, the reason Punk and New Wave have endured relatively unchanged and with undiminished popularity longer than any other pop genre, generally sound as fresh as when they were new, and are likely to continue to endure indefinitely, is because structurally they owe a lot to Classical, particularly of Beethoven's era.
Whenever the notion took me, or whenever possible (frequently, considering KGLT had one of the largest and broadest vinyl libraries in existence) I liked to have each show follow either a subject theme, or a "sounds like" theme, and strove for seamless segues, leading to some unusual effects. A few of my playlists (mostly somewhat incomplete, being those I have tapes of) have survived to the present; for your perusal here are samples of what my audience had to put up with. See if you can guess my opening and closing theme songs. :)
